California Institute of Technology. Workshop Mechanical and Civil Engineers shape our physical environment from the cities we live in, the machines we use, the way we travel, the energy that powers these to delivering the water we need. Our research addresses fundamental issues that represent roadblocks in critical technologies towards engineering our physical environment. 29 Dec 2020 Email: wennberg@caltech.edu. Stratospheric ozone, found in the upper atmosphere (which begins about 5 miles above Earth's surface), forms a protective layer that helps block ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun.Too much UV exposure can lead to vision loss and skin cancers. But according to Paul Wennberg, Caltech's R. Stanton Avery Professor of Atmospheric Chemistry and Environmental Science and Engineering, and his colleagues, it is possible that a significant source of methane, at least in the Los Angeles basin, is fugitive emissions—leaks—from the natural-gas supply line.

Wennberg, an atmospheric chemist and environmental geochemist, studies the influence of human activity on the global atmosphere. The Wennberg research group applies traditional physical chemistry techniques (e.g. LIF, absorption spectroscopy, mass spectroscopy) to study the mechanisms of chemical transformation in the Earth's atmosphere and the carbon cycle.
